Secret Solution - “Except Each Other”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on May 30th, 2006

While doomsayers lay dying in wait for the next 15-minute imposters to affirm their worst fears about rock-n-roll’s imminent demise, Minnesota’s Secret Solution (formerly Tagine and Flavor) are daring to spread hope among the masses. Hitting countless venues throughout the upper-Midwest, they’re taking audiences on a crusade far beyond the clichéd confines of reality TV culture, yet still managing to clock in infectious, hook-heavy songs at a tidy three-and-a-half minutes. It’s the kind of song craft that’s led Minneapolis’ No Alternative Records to proclaim, “Secret Solution proves that the Twin Cities can produce artists beyond its already clever pop heritage.”

Band Members:
Wade Linkert - Voice, Guitars
Alex Moreno - Guitars
Ben Shaffer - Bass
Austin Dingus - Drums

Stack Magic - “Just Like I Did”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on May 29th, 2006

To say the very least, there is a deep and buoyant sigh of relief when the avid music junky finds himself at the mercy of an unprocessed, to-the-point, authoritative rock band. To clarify, this does not include the polished and sometimes tarnished carbon copies sporting the latest suggested fashions, regenerating the previously recycled “alt,” resonance. In a more accurate description, this points to a band grown more organically with roots planted firmly in the essentials of rock and roll. And if you can’t remember the last time you saw a live band that seized your attention within the first 5 minutes of their set, then you haven’t seen Stack Magic.

Band members:
Nathan Spears- Guitar/Vocal Lead
Mario Canido - Rythm Guitar/Keys
Royal Reed - Bass/ Vocal
Trigger - Drums/Vocal

27 Miles - “Where I Belong”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on May 26th, 2006

27 Miles is a five piece original southern rock band spawned from the great outburst of raw musical talent from the bourgeoning Malibu music scene. Their unique sound can be traced to their roots and a philosophy to “keep it real by staying to true to who they are, honoring those that paved the way before them, and bringing back home their own distinctive and timeless southern rock sound.”

The 27 Miles interplay runs delicate and airy to dense and driving. Together they gel magically, soulfully creating a melodic and mesmerizing signature sound that plays heavy and explosive with a sophisticated integration of accompaniments, harmonies and an unstoppable rhythmic juggernaut: a single, powerful and textured sound.

Band Members:

Donny Kulp - songwriter, rhythm and lead guitarist

The Negatones - “Paused Upon The Rewind”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on May 25th, 2006

A genre-defying sonic rock freakout by this New York collective of cult producer / remixers. The electro popmetal soundtrack to a party you’d only want to throw in someone else’s apartment. For fans of good music and stylistic transcendence.

NYC luminaries have been quietly discovering these local producing / mixing / remixing masterminds; members of the Negatones have worked with Chuck D, Feiry Furnaces, Dan the Automator, Adam Green (Moldly Peaches) and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and that’s just in the last year. Their production chops notwithstanding, its their own ferociously unique take on rock that gets them their hard-earned and well-deserved kudos. Fortunately they find the time to continue putting on astonishing live shows and cranking out their own recordings.

Band Members:
Jay Braun - vocals, guitar, synth
Justin Braun - vocals, bass, synth
Jun Takeshta - guitar, mallots, vocals
Jesse Wallace - drums, percussion, vocals

Breaking Laces - “God In Training”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on May 25th, 2006

Part long hair rockers, part country club golfers, and part music school prodigies, Breaking Laces is a three-piece acoustic rock band based in Brooklyn with a big sound and a growing following. Approachable and earnest, yet still able to get into a little trouble, the boys are ready to Lace you.

Breaking Laces sound has been compared to bands across the spectrum - Violent Femmes, Lemonheads, Ben Folds Five, Elvis Costello, Counting Crows, Weezer and everything in between. Comparisons, however, don’t quite do justice. Simply put, what’s so different about this band is that they are the real deal. From the songwriting to the vocals to the explosive and quirky live show, it’s no wonder people have really started to take notice of this band from Brooklyn.

Band Members:
Willem Hartong - acoustic and electric guitar, vocals
Rob Chojnacki - bass, keyboard and back-up vocals
Seth Masarsky - drums and percussion

Palodine - “Fire In The Field”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on May 20th, 2006

Children of Coal Miners, Southern Preachers and Mormon Immigrants don’t usually make for good rock music candidates, but in the case of Palodine they bring with them an underlying power and intensity which tests the boundaries of dark American music. Within a few months of forming, enough material had been written for their debut full-length “Desolate Son” and they began laying down songs on an 8-track analogue recorder. The result is a provocative portrayal of violence, remorse, and final words. Alternating in mood from fierce to somber, Desolate Son is bound together by the rich vocals of Katrina Whitney and the lush instrumentation of Michael Aryn. Adding the final touches of pedal steel, dobro, bass, and backing vocals, Jason Brooks completes the trio.

Band Members:
Michael Aryn - Guitar
Katrina Whitney - Vocals, Shakers, Tambourine
Jason Brooks - guitar, keys, pedal steel
