The Green And Yellow TV - “Monday Tuesday”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on August 30th, 2006

The Green and Yellow TV make music that exists somewhere between pop’s past and it’s future, between the first giddy wave of Sixties psychedelic exuberance and a sound entirely new, a mix of crisp vocal harmonies and delicately constructed melodies which manage to take the familiar and make it fresh- all over again. Turn on The Green and Yellow TV and you’ll hear hints of Kinks’ bounciness, sleek Beach Boys’ beauty and some classic rock swagger, but soaring above it all is a bright and beautiful sound of their very own.

With their newest album, Sinister Barrier, The Green and Yellow TV have honed their skills to a sharp and gleaming edge, producing an array of distinctive songs that take the pop tradition and run. This is a band that knows exactly how to bring an unexpected depth to a catchy beat without losing all the sweetness of accessibility, and Sinister Barrier delivers the pop sugar with enough guitar grit and lyrical smarts to keep away the cavities.

Band Members:
Todd - vocals, bass

The warmth of Shawn Colvin’s folk, the pointed edge and vocal resonance of Lucinda Williams. Jessie Murphy - “Room Alone”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on August 26th, 2006

Jessie Murphy was born and raised in New York City and her original songs and style have made her a favorite performer in her hometown and in New York’s legendary Antifolk scene. “There’s a cargo hold of humanity in the beautiful Jessie Murphy’s songs,” read last Summer’s Antifolk Fest program, “She packs houses, she wows crowds, she’s one to watch.” Jessie is also a frequent Village Voice choice. The paper once described singer-songwriter Jessie Murphy as sounding like both a “photonegative of Jimi Hendrix” and “Joni Mitchell’s scrappy kid sister with a voice like rippling silk.”

Murphy grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Al Green, Simon and Garfunkel and Sarah Vaughn. In recent years she’s also been influenced by artists like Belle and Sebastian, Fiest, The Kings of Convenience and Regina Spektor. Foremost a guitarist, she spent a year developing her guitar work and performance style at the Berkley School of Music in Boston. Murphy graduated from Columbia University with a combined degree in English and Creative Writing. Upon graduation, she embarked on a professional career in music, teaching private guitar lessons while continuing to study music independently.

The Last Show - “Go & Dream”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on August 26th, 2006

The Last Show is a New York City punk power trio with a sound that lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Justin Lizama describes as “bipolar rock.” You can hear what he means on “DC (Choose a Side),” a track from the band’s recently issued EP Honestly is a Word Used by Liars. As the song begins, Lizama’s dark melody and foreboding lyrics are propelled by a sonic assault of driving bass, relentless drums and howling guitar feedback. But in an abrupt mood shift, the band breaks into a triumphant punk chorus with the lyric “People, people, Take a walk outside / Save your soul, save your mind.”

Band Members:
Justin Lizama - guitar/vocals
Eric Hauptman - bass
Brian Clemens - drums

Jody Shelton - “Driveway”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on August 23rd, 2006

Singer/songwriter/keyboardist Jody Shelton’s southern roots and classical background are evident in his penchant for heartbreaking and epic soundscapes, and it is these influences that serve as the foundation for his classic pop melodies. And while there may be classical, jazz, and country elements in the music, Jody’s is definitely a modern rock band. Eric Wilhelm (guitar/production), Ricardo Rodriguez (bass), and Christopher Heinz (drums) bring grit and drama to the epics, poetry to the ballads and soul to the grooves. Nowhere is this dynamic more prevalent in their live shows, which remain infused with their unique energy and charisma. The individual personalities of each band member are fully present onstage, as Jody serves as the centerpiece and anchor, bringing familiarity, warmth and showmanship to a truly engaging live show.

The Mercury Seed - “Come Undone”

Posted in Uncategorized by aditya on August 21st, 2006

Go spend some quality time with Dust, the second independently released CD by The MercurySeed, and the essence of indie rock is unveiled. “Waiting,” case in point, which starts off with authentic scratchy AM radio snow, is the kind of fast-folk pop tune that Tom Petty would be proud of, with Robert Smith guitar accents straight outta the Cure layered over a jangle of acoustic stronk associated with Whiskeytown, but chopped-up Keith Richards style. “Come Undone,” a little two-chord rocker, works up a Beach Boys vocal harmony on the chorus, a bridge that pays homage to the Who, and an elastic James Burton West Coast guitar solo that’s redolent of Ricky Nelson’s Imperial years. Got the picture”

Band Members:
Vocals: Volker Lemmer
Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Joe Nemchek & John Jackson
Drums: Rob Langer
Bass: Gary D’Andrea

The Strugis Trash live show colaborates duelling drum kits, throaty vocal lines, driving guitar riffs, supreme bass tones, live audio sampling and even the odd saxophone lick.
